TWO thugs who robbed a Leigh shop armed with an axe, hammer and knife were today on the run from police.

Just after 10am on Friday, the pair walked into Poundstretcher on the Parsonage Retail Park and threatened and swung at staff with the axe before stealing a substantial amount of money.

They ran off and escaped in a silver Audi A6. The car was later found abandoned on wasteland near to Phillips Street.

Police say no one was hurt in the incident but the victims were left badly shaken.

Descriptions of the fugitives were immediately issued.

Both were white men wearing scarves. The man with the axe was between 6ft and 6ft 2ins tall, of medium build, dressed all in black including a hooded top.

His accomplice was about 5ft 6ins tall, of stocky build, with a black scarf across nose and mouth with a motorbike muffler and a dark cap. He was wearing a black and tanned top, possibly hooded. The knife was in his right hand and the hammer was in his left.

Det Sgt Peter Carletti from Wigan CID said: “Staff have been left terrified after the robbery and I would urge anyone who was in the area and saw something suspicious to contact us.”
