WATER water everywhere ... and it was Ted Dakin’s job to ensure that millions of gallons were not lost in deep-underground leaks.

Now 81, Ted spent all his working life in the water industry – from Wigan Corporation to the Makerfield Water Board.

And as his book “A Life in Water” is published, he admits: “It’s my favourite drink.”

Ted, of Gidlow Lane, Wigan, has penned three other books on his life in Wigan – from being born into a poor home to enjoying life in the local dance halls.

“It’s always wise to write about the things you know best. And I know Wigan better than anywhere else in the world. Ask me to write about life in Bolton or St Helens or Leigh and I’d be lost.”

Ted has found a ready readership following, people who have experienced life in those “good old, bad old days” and his three other books are all titled after Wigan Pier.

“A Life in Water” comprises nine short stories peppered with an array of colourful characters who worked alongside Ted in a host of different working situations.

Ted added: “I spent 35 years up to my neck in water, you might say. Because of ill health, I took the big decision to take early retirement.

“Well, I had time on my hands, so decided to have a go at writing and it’s almost taken over my life.

“My other books have been well received, especially the one in which I recapture memories of childhood in and around Miry Lane in Wigan.

“We lived in a poor area and we had to make our own entertainment. Families cared about each other and of course, we kids had no idea that we were poor.”

Ted said that his latest book is smaller than his previous works but believes each of the nine short stories has an appeal all of its own.
