RECORD numbers of smokers tried to give up during the Stoptober campaign with health chiefs celebrating smoking levels reaching a record low in the borough.

Some 1,365 people signed up to the month long quitting challenge during October - the second highest number in Greater Manchester.

The news comes as public health chiefs revealed that smoking prevalence rates in the borough are at all time low of 20.2 per cent - only 0.1 per cent above the North West average.

While it still means that one in five of us are smoking health chiefs say the drop in the number of people smoking in recent years is testament to the hard work put in by local health services, not least the Stop Smoking service run by the Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Professor Kate Ardern, Wigan’s director of public health, said: “We are moving in the right direction but there is still work to be done. Smoking is still the biggest cause of premature deaths in the borough but the latest figures show just how well our stop smoking teams are doing.

“The final Stoptober figures show excellent results for Wigan as we have the second highest in Greater Manchester in terms of sign ups and total estimates including digital sign-ups are 1365.”

Last year 1,202 people attempted to give up during Stoptober meaning a further 167 people attempted this year.

Rona Daniels, consultant in health improvement at Public Health England added: “I would like to congratulate everyone who took up the Stoptober Challenge - quitting smoking isn’t easy but it is one of the most significant health improvements a person can make. Stoptober has provided people with a focus to quit and I think their efforts should be applauded.”

Wigan Stop Smoking Service offer all smokers one to one help to kick the habit and statistics prove success rates are far higher with help.
