Land Rover has pulled the covers off what it calls the “ultimate” Discovery.

Being unveiled at the Frankfurt motorshow today the new Discovery is the first Land Rover to wear the SVX name and has been specially adapted to make it even more capable and versatile than the standard model.

It has been designed and built by Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicles Operations team to sit alongside the performance-focussed SVR and luxury-oriented SVAutobiography lines.

Offered exclusively with Jaguar Land Rover’s 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol engine, the Discovery SVX packs 518bhp and 461lb/ft of torque and features a series of modifications to set it apart from the standard car.

The Discovery’s already impressive ground clearance, approach and departure angles, and wheel articulation have been enhanced by raising the ride height, fitting long-travel dampers, revised knuckles and, in a first for the Discovery, fitting hydraulic active roll control (H-ARC).

Larger Goodyear Wrangler tyres with a more aggressive tread pattern help increase ride height further while improving grip in the muddiest conditions while active centre and electronic rear locking differentials help maximise grip on all surfaces.

Alongside the hardware upgrades, the Discovery SXV’s transmission and Terrain Response 2 software have been specially calibrated for the model and a “pistol shifter” has been fitted in place of the drive select rotary shifter to offer better control of gear selection in off-road conditions.

From the outside the SVX is distinguishable by its unique Tectonic Grey satin paint and Rush Orange highlights on the wheels and bodywork. There are also unique front and rear bumpers incorporating skid plates, and integrated rear winch, black grille and roof rails and a roof-mounted unit with two additional light pods.

The Discovery SVX reinforces Land Rover’s unrivalled reputation for building vehicles with true all-terrain capability for customers who desire the ultimate in off-road performance.”

The Discovery SVX will be hand-built at Jaguar Land Rover’s SVO facility, with the first models going on sale next year. Prices are yet to be announced but the current range-topping 3.0-litre petrol HSE Luxury weighs in at more than £65,000 and with the Range Rover Sport SVR costing £10,000 more than the closest standard model expect a similar jump to the Discovery SVX.
