Rock fans are set for a Great Reckoning with the latest up-and-coming group on the borough’s music scene to release its debut EP.

Four-piece Great Reckoning, from Tyldesley, showcase a sound drawing on everything from 70s metal and prog to more contemporary guitar sounds on the five tracks that make up Owl’s Eye.

The band, comprising vocalist Lewis Tooby, guitarist Andy Pendlebury, bassist Laiton Price and drummer Jordan Lawley-White, have chosen a striking image for their first release, with the EP cover depicting a huge eye-catching owl with a rather secret society-esque design of a triangle and an eye in the middle of it beneath.

The five tracks follow hot on the heels of earlier songs Finally and Bleed For Your Life, which were released as a two-track single.

The band draws on an eclectic pool of influences, with singer Lewis citing the Arctic Monkeys as a major inspiration, Laiton taking cues from the likes of Frank Turner and Deaf Havanna, guitarist Andrew enjoying the bluesier sounds of Black Sabbath and Kings of Leon and drummer Jordan being a fan of rock icons such as Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd.

The group also brings a variety of backgrounds and non-musical jobs to the table, with Andrew working as a chemistry teacher, Laiton an events manager, Lewis studying at university and Jordan working in the day as an insurance administrator.

Great Reckoning came together of the ashes of other bands from the Tyldesley area – Everyday Goldfish, which Lewis and Laiton were in while at school, and Raised By Wolves.

Today’s line-up was formed at the end of 2015 when Lewis filled the gap left by original singer Josh Glen, who departed to pursue a career in acting, and rhythm guitarist Matty Lyons also left.

The group launched the EP, recorded at The Lounge studio in Wigan, with a hometown show at The Queen’s Arms in Tyldesley and are also making inroads into the Manchester scene.

Proceeds from the sale of the band’s CDs will be going to Manchester hospital The Christie.
