LEIGH MP Andy Burnham and Lord Peter Smith, Leader of Wigan Council, have praised the achievements of Leigh Centurions after they won the Kingstone Press Championship League Leaders Shield.
Paul Rowley’s side thrashed their closest rivals Featherstone Rovers at the Sports Village last Friday to seal top spot with three games to spare.
With only one defeat in 23 games, it has been a memorable year for the club who are odds on favourites to go on and win the Championship Grand Final.
Mr Burnham said: “It is a truly outstanding achievement – this is certainly the best Leigh team I can remember. The quality of rugby they have played at times has been a joy to behold. There is a great connection between the town and this team and as the town’s MP I could not be more proud.
“Paul Rowley has excelled in the role and has built a great spirit in the club and generated excitement in the town.
“It is all coming together at the right time with the imminent restructuring of the game. I don’t think they have had the credit they deserve for maintaining such a high level of performance week in, week out.”
Lord Peter Smith, Leader of Wigan Council said: I’m absolutely delighted. The team has been in impressive form all season and this success is just reward for all their efforts. Paul Rowley and his players are the pride of Leigh.
“I’d also like to congratulate the backroom team. They run the club with professionalism and passion and that has brought stability and success to the Centurions.
“This has been a fantastic season and it’s an exciting time for fans as the club seems to be going from strength to strength.”
