LEIGH Centurions head for Headingley on Sunday looking to crown an amazing season by winning the Kingstone Press Championship Grand Final.
Paul Rowley’s side won the League Leaders Shield with three games to spare and have beaten Doncaster and Dewsbury in the play-offs to reach the prestigious final where they’ll face Featherstone Rovers.
With a backbone of locally born players and coached by a former Leigh player, this team has captured the imagination like few before it.
“Leigh’s record this season has been outstanding,” said proud MP Andy Burnham who will be at the final on Sunday.
“The people of Leigh salute them for their magnificent achievements this season and I hope and pray they win on Sunday because they deserve to be crowned champions.
“This team has brought a lot of joy to a lot of people.”
Lord Peter Smith, Leader of Wigan Council, said: “It’s already been an incredible season for Leigh Centurions. I’d like to congratulate the team on reaching the Grand Final and wish them the very best of luck for Sunday.
“It would be a fitting finish to such a stunning season to see Paul Rowley’s men take the title.
“The whole of Leigh is buzzing and the whole of the borough is proud of the club’s achievements. This is a super team and a super club in a super town and I hope and believe next year Leigh Centurions will be promoted to the Super League.”
