Tyldesley Colts Lancashire Under-18s Cup Final hopes faltered at the final hurdle as nerves and the occasion probably got to the majority, with far, far too many leaving their normally very competitive performances in the dressing room.
This team has already proved it is far better than the score suggestsby getting to the final and although they knew they had to be at the top of their game just to stay in touch with big favourites Collegiate, the competition was effectively over after just 23 minutes.
The opposition cut through a normally staunch defence, seemingly at will to record a point a minute, with three tries, one converted and two penalties.
Tyldesley grabbed a life line and a little hope in the 34th minute, after good hands from Griffiths, Lloyd, Guest Bowes, ended with Fisher breaking, then Rushton crashing over from a tapped penalty seconds later, Griffiths hit the post with a well struck conversion. Half time 5-23.
The half time talk was all about not giving in, but Collegiate ran in a further six tries two converted, in the second half.
Bowes, Fisher, Guest, Griffiths, Lloyd, Norton and Rushton defended and played like warriors from the first to last whistle and never gave in.
Finishing sixth in a very tough league, reaching the league cup quarter finals and ending the season with a Lancashire cup final appearance can only be classed as a decent season.
And the club thanks W Howard’s wood yard Astley, for their kind donation.
