Team Leigh boxer Jack Catterall has won through to his second consecutive National Final.
Appearing alongside team mate Tom Jonesin the NACYP National semi Finals in Wakefield on Sunday, lightweight Jack was in blistering form, outboxing and outpunching fellow England International Ronnie McNamara of Hoddesdon ABC. After a competitive first two rounds Jack smoothly pulled away in the final two rounds to take a comfortable points victory, and a place in the National Final in Essex on Thursday, November 24.
Light Heavyweight Tom Jones was up against four-time National Champion Jacob Peterson of Cheshunt ABC and in an amazing first round blasted the Midlands based boxer around the ring forcing an eight count and taking a 6-0 lead. To Peterson’s credit though, he called upon experience gained in a 50-bout career and a tiring Tom heartbreakingly went down 19-13 at the final bell.
In one of the best boxing shows ever seen in the area saw Team Leigh favourites back in winning form, brutal match-ups, returning former boxers, wafer thin losses and the emergence of new local stars of the future.
Wins for Boxer of the Night Ashley Peyton, Senior Boxer of the Night Phil Hervey and Junior Boxer of the Night Zak Evans sealed a fantastic evening of boxing. Wins from Tomi Tatham and Matty Burgess followed wins by the rapidly improving Ben Grimshaw and Leigh ABC debutant Steve Backhouse. Leigh’s other senior debutant John Turner was very unlucky to lose on points as were Josh Waterworth and Sean Connor, while Michael Connor, Adam Ridge and Cameron Pierce all gave their all while tasting defeat. Finally Martin Pilkington covered himself in glory, pushing the National Novice Champion to points despite this being his first bout in four years.
