Leigh Amateur Boxing Club had three boxers appearing in the Elite National Senior ABA Championships on friday evening in Manchester and Jack Catterall, John Turner and Tomi Tatham all returned with winning medals.
Light welterweight Jack Catterall dominated last seasons ABA National Finalist Chris Blinkhorn of Oliver Harrisons Gym, winning the NW region Senior Title 33-10. Southpaw Jack controlled the fight from the centre of the ring, continually landing clean shots while using his superior footwork to confuse his fellow England International, the result never in doubt from the first round. Exciting Heavyweight Tomi Tatham also took the NW Region Senior Title beating the unbeaten and very durable Daniel Graham of Cleaton Moor ABC 4-1 on the judges cards after the computer system failed during his bout.
Tomi was always on the front foot, landing some thunderous body and head shots, and it was to his opponent’s credit that he dug in and made things awkward for the Leigh puncher. Middleweight John Turner used his reach and superior technical skills beat the very strong Chris Hale of Oliver Harrisons Gym, to win his semi-final 22-10 and move on to next weeks NW Region Senior Final.
Team Leigh Matty Burgess, 14, suffered Final heartbreak on Saturday afternoon in the Schoolboy light welterweight National Final in Mansfield. Taking on the giant British Champion Daniel Dubois of London based Dale Youth ABC, Matty never got into his customary all-out attack, frustrated by both Dubois skill and height. No shame in defeat to a real classy youngster, and the experience Matty has had in this season’s competition sees him now ranked at Number 2 in England.
