LEIGH HARRIERS won six county titles at a rain- swept Longford Park over the weekend competing in The Greater Manchester Track and Field Championships.
Eleven year old Keely Hodgkinson was a remarkable double champion for the Harriers. Competing in the u13 girls 800m, Keely won her heat in 2:34.6 setting a new personal best time before taking the final with yet another pb 2:30.6sec - a AAA Grade 2 time and the 10th fastest in UK this year.
Keely returned to contest the u13 girls 1200m. Showing race tactics beyond her years and controlling from the front she put in a blistering last lap winning in another personal best time of 4:03 – a AAA Grade 3 time and ranking her 12th in the UK.
Fourteen year old Dan Shields’ performance in the u 15 boys 300mts was outstanding. Dominating from the gun he ran 39.82sec – AAA Grade 4 time - to win the county title. Sanna McLean was Leigh’s first winner for many years in the u13 girls Long Jump clearing 3.88m, whilst Billy Joe Blain was a double medal winner - first in the Boys u13 Shot with a putt of 5.19m and a silver in the 100m in a time of 15.62.
Laura Riches made a great start to the season winning the senior ladies 3000m steeple chase title in a championship record time of 10m 52secs and Adam Emerson won silver in the u17 200m in a time of 25.43sec. Kurtis Aspin narrowly missed a medal to finish in fourth place, whilst Sabrina Walley ran a personal best time in the u17 ladies 3000m of 10m 58 secs finishing 2nd. Callum McCormick ran a personal best time in the U 17 800m, winning the bronze medal in a time of 2m 09secs.
In the younger 800m races Joseph Wane ran 2:35.3 in 5th place Ben McLaughlin 2:40 in 6th. Sanna McLean ran a personal best of 2:45.7 in her 800m heat for 4th, whilst Jacob Briscoe was 8th in the u15 boys 800m setting a new pb in 2:30.8. The u15 boys 1500m saw Ben McLaughlin knock 12 seconds off his best, just missing a medal in fourth place in a time of 5.08sec – AAA Grade 4 time - with Joseph Wane also running a PB in the 1500m with a time of 5:22.
Meanwhile over in Rossendale, competing in the Cowpe Fell Race, Kristian Wade and Eve Williams continued in their fell race series of 2013. Kristian – U14 - finished in 15th place in 23:07, whilst Eve – U12 – finished 11th in 20:14.
