Leigh Harriers athletes put in good performances

Once again athletes from Leigh Harriers & AC had a busy weekend, competing on the road, track and cross country.

In the Bolton 10k Road Race, Leigh’s senior men raced to first team place with Phil Williams 7th 35:42, Tom Henders 8th 35:54, Neil Pendlebury 10th 36:14 and Tony Battersby 11th 36:14 beating their nearest rivals Bolton Harriers for the first time this season, and this on their own patch.

Over at Cossford Bridge Sale, a group of young Leigh athletes competed in the annual Over The Bales races. Leigh Harriers have had good results in the past and this year the team did themselves proud.

Josef Short U11 and Kristian Wade U13 were winners of their age groups in 5:05 and 9:02 respectively taking home gold medals. Eve Williams U13 and Melissa Ince U9 also were in the medals in 9:26 and 6:52 taking home bronze medals as each raced to 3rd place. Sam Wade U11 had a good run to finish in 16th place 7:11.

The weather was windy and cold at Liverpool Wavertree, athletes competed in the Ernie Gallagher Memorial Track & Field Meeting; in total the athletes took home 4 gold, one silver and 3 bronze medals.

In the U17s, Callum McCormick stormed to 1st place in the 800m clocking 2:02.3pb.

Earlier in the day in the Yr 5 race, Coel Mellor ran a fantastic 600m to win in 1:54.5 pb, whilst brother Shea raced to 2nd place in the Yr 6 800m 2:40.7 pb, 3rd 200m 32.00 and 2nd long jump 3:61.

Ben McLaughlin competed in the Yr7 800m and took home gold clocking 2:27.4, whilst Billy Blain placed 3rd 2:41.9 pb, 4th 200m 32.2.

Jacob Briscoe, racing in his first ever 1500m raced to 1st for gold in 4:55 pb.Other notable performances came from Joseph Wane 4th 800m 2:30.6, 6th 200m 32.20, LJ 3.61; Anna Smith 6th 800m 3:15, 200m 37.0; Krishna Lilley 4th 100m 16.00; Laura Hickey 4th 75m 11.3; Emma McIntyre 5th 800m 2:52.1; Grace Newton 5th 1200m 4:50, LJ 10th 2.99; Nadine Smith 5th 150m 27.4, 600m 6th 2:27.3; Coel Mellor 2nd soft jav. 16.57, 150m 4th 26.2
