It was another great weekend for Team Leigh Boxing with professional Gary Davies securing a points victory on Friday evening and Leigh Amateur Boxing Club’s Matty Burgess winning in the National Schools Championships on Sunday.
On Friday evening at Bowlers, Manchester, former British Bantamweight Champion Gary Davies, now training with coach Adrian Fleming at Leigh Boxing & Fitness Gym, had his first fight for 14 months following a hand operation and was matched with the tough super bantamweight Ian Bailey from London’s TKO Gym.
In a close and exciting contest, Gary’s ring rust was apparent in the early rounds, but he came on strong, despite a headclash which caused a cut to his left eye, to seal a deserved points victory. Gary is now, injury permitting, scheduled to box again in seven weeks time in Liverpool.
On Sunday afternoon Leigh Amateur Boxing Club’s 14-year-old light welterweight Matty Burgess produced another storming performance in the National Schools Championships outpointing the unbeaten George Reynolds of Solihull ABC. Conceeding 5lb in weight and around six inches in height, the talented Leigh boxer constantly kept his opponent on the back foot. Winning every round, Matty progressed to the National Quarter Finals next weekend with a 35-27 points win.
