Dyson sets ball rolling

Anselmians RUFC 12

Leigh RUFC 29

Both sides were disrupted by Easter withdrawals, but the Leigh replacements proved much stronger as they emerged comfortable winners, and condemned the home side to relegation.

Anselmians started well, but missed the early penalty chance. Leigh immediately took control to score three tries in quick succession. Firstly, from a counter attack by Elliott Ryan, the ball was moved sweetly, for Osh Griffiths to send Adam Dyson under the posts. Next, Calvin Crompton broke from midfield, and his long pass sent Dyson under the posts again. Thirdly, Crompton finished good forward pressure to score by the posts. Ryan converted all three tries to put Leigh in total command. The home side then showed spirited resistance, for their south seas contingent to score twice before the interval.

The second half saw a keen contest, but Leigh came stronger with the slope in their favour. David Wood found Dyson for the winger to complete his hat trick, before outside half Jimmy Wilkinson completed the scoring with a calmly taken drop goal.

Strong performances came from youngsters Ross Shepherd and Chris Cowley.
