Leigh Senior Colts (pictured) won the 2014 Cock of the North Trophy in a tense, nail biter against highly rated Burton at Sandbach Rufc .
The size of the task was apparent for all to see, as the giant Burton squad lined up to dwarf the Leigh outfit and it was only the bravery and defensive commitment of the Leigh lads that kept them in the game in the first half.
Wave after wave of Burton attacks saw Leigh penned in their own half for the first 35 mins, but an excellent penalty from half way saw Rob Drake keep Leigh in the game and it was 3-3 at half-time.
The second half became a much more even affair, as Leigh’s awesome defence began to take it’s toll on Burton’s confidence and a smartly worked move from the scrum, saw full back Ollie Shepherd link up in the line to outpace the Burton defence and grab a try, converted by Rob Drake, to see Leigh take the lead.
Burton continued to press and were rewarded with an unconverted try of their own to keep the drama going.
The game continued to be a war of attrition with the Leigh lads not giving an inch and making forays into the Burton half.
The Hand Lane side scented victory could be theirs against this very good Burton team, however a late penalty against Leigh gave Burton the chance to snatch victory at the death, but it was not to be and as the ball bounced off the upright, the referee blew his whistle and Leigh gained the victory they truly deserved .
An epic game, from two very good sets of lads.
This group of Leigh Colts now retire to play open age rugby with the record of: Raging Bull C League Champions 2013 ( undefeated ); Raging Bull B League Champions 2014; Raging Bull Snr Colts FairPlay Trophy winners 2014; Cock of the North Trophy winners 2014.
