Ryan Brierley’s five tries at Barrow was only the 17th such feat by a Leigh player since 1895.
Billy Smith was the first Leigh player to score five tries in a match, against Liverpool City in December 1906. This was the first season after the game switched from 15-a-side to 13-a-side.
Smith repeated the feat against Keighley in 1908.
Jack Wood became the first Leigh player to score six tries in a game, against York in 1947. He also kicked eight goals in Leigh’s 60-7 victory.
