Leigh’s friendly at Halifax - planned for Sunday (February 9) - has been cancelled.
The game was to be Centurions’ final pre-season warm-up game ahead of the new season but The Shay pitch was deemed unplayable today,
A Halifax spokesman said: “After an inspection of the pitch this afternoon it is just about playable even with the standing water. However the council groundsmen have tried to mark out the pitch today and the field was too wet to even take the markings.
“With the current forecasted deluge and with preservation of the pitch for the first league fixture being more important we have made the decision to cancel the friendly against Leigh this weekend.
“We would like to thank the Council and their staff for their efforts in trying to get the game on. It has been difficult decision to make but the right one we think for all parties concerned. There are no more games planned at the Shay between now and our first home league fixture against Swinton and this will hopefully improve the chances of playing next Sunday.”
Leigh’s next game is on Sunday, February 16 against Batley - the first match of the Championship season.
