LEIGH’S stars of today lined up for a special team photo ahead of the club’s Heritage Day on Saturday.

The players are seen wearing a specially commissioned kit based on an early design and manufactured by Centurions’ teamwear suppliers O’Neills.

Leigh’s regular sponsors all agreed to forego their logos for the kit which features the town’s coat of arms and that player’s heritage number.

The Heritage Day marks the launch of the club’s heritage numbers which have been painstakingly compiled by Leigh fan and author Mike Latham.

Nearly 1,400 players have their own heritage number and all will be honoured on the day with many former players expected to attend the game against Workington which kicks off at 3pm.

The heritage carnival will begin at 11.30am with a funfair outside the stadium.

Fans are urged to enter the stadium early to join the celebrations and witness the heritage numbers being launched in a parade around the pitch. Turnstiles open at noon and concourse bars and refreshment kiosks will be open.

Children from local schools and community groups will be joined by past players and their families to represent each and every player that has ever had the privilege of donning a Leigh shirt.

The parade is due to start at 1.15pm and the club hopes as many fans as possible will arrive early to recognise the commitment made by the children.

Surviving members of Leigh’s 1971 Challenge Cup-winning team are all special guests on the day and other past players will be interviewed on the pitch.

At half-time, more former players will be presented to the crowd including Tommy Sale MBE, Alex Murphy OBE, Kevin Ashcroft, Stuart Ferguson, Tony Cottrell, John Woods, Timmy Street, Neil Turley and David Eckersley who has travelled all the way from Australia to be part of this commemorative day.

After the game, the funfair will continue and fans will get the opportunity to mingle with the past players in the Legends Bar.

A special family ticket is available for £18.95 (two adults and up to four under 16s) if purchased from the ticket office before 5pm on Friday.
