WIGAN Council may come in for a fair amount of criticism but the authority deserves a round of applause for its work tackling eateries with poor hygiene.
Bad restaurants and takeaways are more than just a story for round the dinner table or a weekend inconvenience but can make people seriously ill and should be treated as such.
Not to mention poor hygiene often brings vermin such as rats and insects like cockroaches, which make life a misery for unfortunate residents living nearby.
There is no place for shoddy standards and zero ratings in this day and age and the council is quite right to demand higher improvements or serve notice.
Hopefully by next year the concerningly large crop of premises with a one rating will be significantly reduced as well.
