AS we marvel at the standards of endeavour and excellence demonstrated by the athletes in the Paralympic Games, we should also pause to note the policies of the ConDem Government towards people with disabilities.
Disgracefully one of the commercial sponsors of the Games, ATOS, is engaged by the Government in an exercise intended to remove disability allowances form as many people as possible, making the company an on-going target of protests by groups representing people with disabilities.
Meanwhile, the Government is pressing ahead with its plans to close the Remploy factories, with no alternative employment provision for the people who work in them.
They will be thrown into the dole queues, joining hundreds and thousands of redundant public sector workers, at a time when forecasts of economic recovery are being adjusted downwards, thereby facing lasting poverty.
If medals were award to governments, the ConDems would get golds for hypocrisy and heartlessness!

Health handed over to Psycho
How many, I wonder, have noticed the newly promoted Health Minister Jeremy Hunt’s remarkable resemblance to the late American film actor Anthony Perkins (right).
He, film buffs may recall, played the murderous motel proprietor Norman Bates in the classic Alfred Hitchcock film Psycho. Jeremy has that same shifty look about him that the actor captured.
Although to be fair, I believe that is a prerequisite for most Tory Ministers.
I am glad at least, that one of his pastimes is running and not taxidermy.

Leave religious symbols alone
It seems that in a Christian country such as ours, a person can be legally dismissed for insisting on wearing a cross at work.
In fact, the ruling goes on to say any item of a religious nature.
Are we to assume then that a person from any other religious grouping can also be fired for wearing items that could also be construed to be of a religious nature?
Items such as turbans, burkhas, skull caps etc?
I just wondered as it would seem so unfair to pick on Christians in what is still officially a Christian country!
It’s enough to turn an old rebel like me to religion!
