A WOMAN bravely fought off a bag-snatcher after being attacked in the street in Atherton on New Year’s Eve.
The 57-year-old woman was walking along Hesketh Street after a shopping trip at around 2pm when the thief grabbed her handbag and pulled her to the ground, causing her to fall on to the offender’s bike.
The woman grabbed the wheel of the bike so the thief could not escape, before a resident came over to help the woman and the thief fled, riding down an alleyway towards Car Bank Street.
The attacker is described as white, around 18-20 years old, of medium build, and possibly with fair hair and blue eyes.
He was wearing shorts, a grey hooded top with the hood up and was riding a grey or silver mountain bike.
Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen the incident to come forward.
PC Linda Howcroft, of the Volume Crime Team, said: “The woman was targeted in broad daylight by this thief, who appeared determined to steal her handbag.
“I am certain he did not expect her to put up a fight, but she is a very brave and tenacious lady and has refused to let him get away with her handbag.
“We now want the public’s help to identify this offender before he strikes again.”
