A MEMORIAL service to commemorate the life of former metro deputy chief executive Sue Johnson is being held.
Mrs Johnson, who died in her sleep after a sudden illness just before Christmas, received emotional tributes from councillors at Wednesday’s full meeting at the Town Hall.
A memorial service is to be held in Wigan for the 51-year-old on a date to be confirmed and councillors expressed their shock at the first meeting since the death of the mother of one.
Mayor, Coun Mike Winstanley described Mrs Johnson as somebody who “genuinely cared” about Wigan while Council Leader Lord Peter Smith added: “I was in a real state of shock when I heard. Only days before she was looking forward to Christmas.”
Independent Leader Gary Wilkes said: “To lose a wife and mother is beyond words. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and close colleagues.”
Conservative leader Sean Ell added: “It was a real pleasure to work with her.”
Her ability to speak foreign languages fluently received particular praise – especially from representatives from Angers.
