HUGE plumes of black smoke could be seen for miles around during a massive blaze at a timber firm.

Crews from Leigh, Atherton, Wigan, Hindley and Newton-le-Willows, were all called to Morans Timber Components workshop on the Millingford Industrial Estate in Golborne shortly after 7.45am on Saturday (July 13).

Eight firefighters donned breathing apparatus to tackle a blaze in a packaging area while crews from Leigh used an aerial platform to douse the flames from above.

Firefighters, who spent all weekend at the scene, even had to break through several walls to get to all areas of the fire.

At the height of the blaze, thick black smoke could be seen from up to eight miles away.

The flames destroyed the packaging area and a number of cars, but fire crews managed to prevent the flames from spreading to the manufacturing side of the business.

The cause of the blaze is yet to be established.
