FISH theft in the Leigh area has become a “cottage industry” which the authorities must do more to clamp down on.
That’s the view of John Weedon, secretary of the Lancashire Fishing Association, who urged anyone with information about the latest incident to come forward.
Mr Weedon, of Abram, said: “Fish theft is a cottage industry around here and enough is enough.
“Courts must come down hard on these thieves. Gill netting at Pennington Flash is the most serious recent incident, because the Flash’s fish stock in my view is priceless.
“I would ask anglers to be vigilant, not to approach suspected thieves, and to report any incidents promptly.”
Any suspected fish thefts should be reported to the Environment Agency’s 24-hour hotline on 0800 807 0670 as soon as possible.
