SHOPPERS have been struggling to find somewhere to park after botched renovation work left a number of spaces completely inaccessible.

Workmen installed new kerbs to section off an area of the car park in Leigh as part of an agreement involving the town’s Aldi store and housing provider Adactus.

However, the new kerbs also ended up blocking off access to a number of the spaces, dramatically reducing the amount of room available for people wanting to use the supermarket.

Unhappy residents blasted the situation, saying negotiating the car park had become dangerous and chaotic with some customers at the King Street store resorting to leaving their cars along the edge of the access road.

Hanover Street resident Brian Molyneux, 68, said: “They’ve put the kerbs in and it really seems to have encroached on to Aldi’s car park.

“There’s still two rows of spaces in one area but now a car can’t get out if there’s another vehicle on the other row because of the kerbs.

“There’s probably about 10 spaces which are now unreachable because of the kerbs. There’s spaces lost at the front of the store and some at the back.

“You can imagine what it’s like, finding somewhere to park is terrible. Everyone’s complaining about it.

“It’s so bad people are abandoning their cars at the side of the road, which means it is effectively just one lane to get in and out of the store. Everybody is up in arms about it because it’s absolutely horrendous.”

Mr Molyneux said the modifications have been in place for around a fortnight.

However, an end to the problems could now be in sight as Aldi has agreed to carry out modification work on the car park but did not say exactly when the re-marking would begin.

A spokesman for the supermarket said: “Now that the works by the adjoining owner are complete, we will be re-lining our car park to ensure it operates efficiently.”

An Adactus spokesman said: “The re-landscaping of the car park was undertaken in accordance with a legal agreement between the owners of the car park, Adactus and Aldi to provide dedicated parking areas for the parties to this agreement.

“Aldi are responsible for the line marking of their own parking area.”
