A SCHOOL brass band has finished second in a prestigious national competition.
Fred Longworth School Band finished as runner up in the National Youth Brass Band Championships held at the RNCM (Royal Northern School of Music), in Manchester last Sunday.
Competing in the under 16 section, the band impressed as they competed against from all over the UK and even more remarkably they were the only school band in the competition.
All the other bands were either youth bands or local authority bands made up of the best musicians from several schools.
Brian Taylor, the brass teacher at Fred Longworth said he was “immensley proud” of the band’s achievement.
The adjudicators, who could barely separate first and second places, commented the outstanding musicianship of this young band. The winning band was ‘Chalfont Schools Band’ Gloucestershire, ‘Fred Longworth High School’ Second and ‘Stockport Schools’ in third place.
Fred Longworth High School has successfully maintained a brass band for over thirty years as part of its commitment to extra- curricular music and to the tradition of the local community. It has strong links to Tyldesley Band as has been the starting point for many professional national and international players, composers and conductors. Today, ex- ‘Freddies’ musicians play and conduct bands all over the world.
