THE STARTING pistol has been fired for the final call for one of the borough’s most popular marathons.

There is less than a week to go before the start of the Run the Flash 10k and 5k races around the Pennington beauty spot on August 11...but you can still sign up.

This year is the second year for the Run the Flash event and will see runners from all over the region take to the tracks around the award winning Wigan country park, including Lancashire’s own marathon legend Dr Ron Hill MBE.

The event also includes a Women’s Only 5k FUN RUN where female runners can raise money for charity or get fit without the men.

Chosen charities for this year’s race are Breakthrough Breast Cancer and Tommy’s charity which exists to save babies’ lives through funding research into the causes and prevention of miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth.

Runners are however welcome to run in aid of their chosen charity.

CEO of Tommy’s Jane Brewin said: “Sadly one in four women will lose their baby during pregnancy or birth. Tommy’s exists to change this through funding research to help prevent miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth. Please join our team and help us save more tiny lives.’’

Both races are for people of every standard and ALL are welcome.

Race Director Graham Jackson said: “We are delighted to welcome to this year’s event the addition of a women’s only 5k race and hoping that with the exciting summer of sport now in full swing people will feel inspired to take part.

“Last year we had a great response and raised a lot of money for charity so I hope we can do the same this year.”

The 10k course, which starts at 9.30am will start and finish at Leigh Harriers Athletics track, taking runners into Pennington Flash Country Park and along the trails before returning to Leigh Sports Village.

The Women’s Only 5k run which starts at 11.30am takes runners on a shorter route through Pennington Flash Country Park before returning to Leigh Sports Village. Whether you run, walk, stroll, skip or dance round the course all finishers receive a medal and a big cheer from the crowd.

Entry fee for the 5K race is£6 (£4 for club runners inc chip timing while it costs £18 to enter the 10K race (£16 for club runners) including chip timing.
