POLITICALLY-minded secondary school pupils got the chance to quiz Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham about his life at the top tables of power.

The Leigh MP was at Hindley High School to be interviewed by students and staff and this was then broadcast on the school’s internal podcast, which is hosted by two of the teachers.

Pupils asked Mr Burnham, who has represented Leigh in the House of Commons since 2001 and served in the Cabinet during Gordon Brown’s time as Prime Minister, about his early life and his decision to enter politics, as well as talking about some of his biggest inspirations.

He was also asked about the importance of the youth vote, with teachers hoping the chance to meet Mr Burnham will encourage pupils to vote in elections in the future, as there is particularly low engagement in voting among 18 to 25-year-olds. The visit came about after teachers in the English department realised how many pupils were interested in some of the biggest issues of the day.

This was after a module of work on politics asked them to write essays on topics which particularly engaged them.
