Pretoria pit services

THE WILL be two special memorial services to mark the Pretoria Pit disaster later this month.

Relatives and townspeople are being invited to a Service of Remembrance around the Memorial stone in Ditchfield Garden, West Houghton, followed by the firing of maroons, at 7.40am, on Wednesday December 21.

At 10.00am that morning there will be a full Service of Remembrance at The Parish Church of St Bartholomew followed by the laying of wreaths at the Pretoria Pit Monument.

The Pretoria Pit explosion on December 21 1910 marked the third worst loss of life in British coal mining history with 344 men and boys killed in the fireball and ensueing inferno.
