A MAJOR business depot set to provide hundreds of jobs to boost Wigan’s economy could be up and running in less than a year, planners say.

The Wigan Evening Post last month revealed the 650 to 800 new roles at the vast Poundland depot in Bryn would be earmarked for borough residents.

And company bosses hope to have the South Lancs Industrial Estate site up and running by June 2016 with building work starting this month.

Coun David Molyneux, deputy leader of Wigan Council, said: “We are delighted that work is set to start on site soon with a planned completion date next year.

“We are working with Poundland through this development to help support local people to access jobs and young people to access apprenticeships.”

The town hall handed the discount retailer an incentive package to ward off competition from other local authorities to house the depot.

As part of a legally binding arrangement between the firm and the council, Poundland will guarantee roles for the local workforce in return for the town hall ensuring residents have “correct skill-sets to obtain employment.”

Poundland has now joined forces with Standard Life Investments long lease fund that will be investing £30m to build the site.

The firm’s head of portfolio management, Ben Wall said: “We are extremely pleased that the development of our new North West regional distribution centre is in Wigan.

“As we continue to increase our store portfolio we will look to further expand our warehouse space in the future.”

The depot will be built on the site of the fire-destroyed Georgia Pacific warehouse on the industrial estate.

Coun Molyneux added: “Wigan is ideally placed as a logistics centre for the North West and we are determined to attract more companies who are keen to use our location and excellent links to the motorway network to locate here and help grow their businesses.”
