A MURDER investigation has been launched after a woman died as a result of stab wounds.

In the early hours of this morning (Wednesday) the North West Ambulance Service were called police to an address on Lord Street, Tyldesley, after a woman was found badly wounded.

When officers attended they found a 43-year-old woman with stab wounds to her chest.

She was taken to hospital where she died a few hours later. A Home Office post mortem is yet to take place.

A 47-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Detective Inspector Graham Atherton from Wigan division, said: “We are in the early stages of the investigation and are working to establish the full circumstances of what happened.

“I would like to reassure residents that there is no danger to the community and we believe this is an isolated incident and would urge anyone who may have seen something to contact us.”
