POLICE patrols have been stepped up after shots were fired in an Atherton street.

Officers say that it is lucky no-one was hurt or even killed after several rounds were heard in Coronation Avenue.

Forensic officers have since recovered a bullet which had been blasted into a parked car.

Residents rang 999 shortly after 10.20pm on Wednesday August 28 after hearing several loud bangs.

Police carried out a number of inquiries. There were no reports of any injuries. Then at 10.30am the next day, police received a report that a bullet hole had been found in the door of a Fiat Punto on the street.

This prompted further detailed inquiries, including the forensic recovery of the bullet. The street and a section of nearby Spa Road was also closed to traffic.

Det Chief Insp Howard Millington said: “Somebody going about their business could have been killed or seriously injured as a result of this incident.

“We understand that the community will be concerned, particularly as incidents of this nature are so rare. As such, patrols are being stepped up in the area and officers are on hand to address any concerns people may have.”
