RESIDENTS have reacted angrily to a national house-builder’s plans for around 150 new homes in Lowton.
Persimmon is preparing to submit an application for an estate on land near Pocket Nook Lane, which has been identified for future house-building under Wigan Council’s Core Strategy.
The company, which is expected to make around a quarter of the properties affordable homes to buy or rent, will hold a public consultation in Lowton to discuss the plans with residents next week.
Residents’ groups such as the Lowton East Neighbourhood Development Forum (LENDF) says residents have expressed concerns about house building off Abbey Road, with particular fears about access to the new estates.
LENDF secretary Irene Thomson said: “There are definitely going to be objections from residents and we will support them to ensure the developers mitigate the effects of any housebuilding.”
The Core Strategy, a local authority blueprint for building needs until 2026, is currently being scrutinised by Government planning inspector Kevin Ward. His final report is expected soon.
Persimmon said its site would include major improvements to local sport and leisure facilities in the area. Its regional MD Neil Follows added: “We will make a substantial contribution towards education and sport and recreation provision in the local area to help facilitate the development. There will be large areas of public open space and a children’s play area on site. We see investment of this type in the North West as vital for economic recovery, creating new jobs. We are very keen to receive feedback and comment from local residents about our proposals and welcome dialogue with all stakeholders.”
The public consultation event for the Abbey Road proposals will be held at the Rose Centre, on Hesketh Meadow Lane in Lowton, on August 1 between 3pm and 7pm.
