A £50m major retail and leisure park development is now officially open.

The Loom, on Spinning Jenny Way, which has been built on the site of the former Barlo radiator works, had its ribbon cut by Leigh MP Andy Burnham yesterday.

The opening ceremony saw the unveiling of a seven-screen Cineworld multiplex and two restaurant units belonging to American-style diner chain Frankie and Benny’s, which opened immediately, and Chinese buffet restaurant The Real China, which will open on Monday.

The site already boasts a huge Tesco Extra supermarket and petrol station, which has been open since September, and also has one remaining restaurant unit, which is expected to open next year.

Lawyers are currently drawing up a contract for the unit with a nationally-recognised restaurant chain.

The development, which has been completed by Salmon Developments, is also served by 800 car parking spaces.

Neil Yeomans, owner of property agency Lyndon Yeomans, who have acted as joint agents with DMR Richtrend, said: “It’s very satisfying to see it all opening, three years to the day since we first became aware of the site’s availability.

“It’s a superb facility for the people of Leigh, and will do so much for the town.

“It’s a very good day for everyone involved, and a real success story in a very tough market.

“The people of Leigh can be very proud of The Loom. All the Wigan and Leigh councillors have been very supportive during the construction process, and the whole project has been an excellent example of what can happen when everybody works together.”

Leythers visiting the development are being encouraged to try out their new facilities with a variety of offers.

Cineworld, whose new fully-digital multiplex is one of the most technologically-advanced cinemas in the North West, with four screens capable of showing films in 3D, opened its doors to the public at 12 o’clock before screening began at 1pm with a showing of the new Twilight film, Breaking Dawn Part 1.

Cinema-goers can get free popcorn through an offer with mobile phone giant O2 until December 1.

In addition, The Real China will be offering customers £5 off their meals with a voucher during its first weeks of operation.
