A BOROUGH Morrisons store has been earmarked for closure.
Morrisons announced last week that it was to shut 11 of its larger outlets and it has now been revealed that the site in Shuttle Street, Tyldesley, is on the list stating it is likely to close.
Ward councillor Stephen Hellier, said: “I am shocked by this news, which is devastating for both Morrisons employees and the Tyldesley residents who rely on the store.
“Shoppers, especially vulnerable people and the elderly, who do not necessarily have cars, will be seriously inconvenienced. What I find particularly galling is that Tyldesley centre no longer has a butcher, greengrocer or fishmonger and local people believe that Morrisons has played a significant role in driving these former businesses out of town.
“For Morrisons to quit when the going gets tough leaves its workers and Tyldesley shoppers high and dry. I have written to Morrisons to make the case for a re-think.”
The futures of the stores in Ince, Wigan town centre and Leigh are still not yet known.
