FAMILIES in the borough are being encouraged to foster a child to help tackle a major shortfall in carers.

A major recruitment drive has been launched to encourage more people to consider becoming foster carers - and Wigan Council is one of 10 North West authorities to have joined the You Can Foster campaign, which aims to recruit 150 foster carers in 150 days.

Leigh MP Andy Burnham met with carers at a meeting organised by leading foster care agency, Foster Care Associates (FCA), who have almost 300 foster carers in the region.

He discussed training and recognition given to foster carers and how the needs of children and families can best be met.

Mr Burnham said: “Outcomes for looked after children remain unacceptably low. I was extremely impressed by the high standards of practice demonstrated by the foster families I met.”

FCA Head of Operations Mick Austin said: “Our conversations with Mr Burnham represent an important step forward in helping politicians understand the issues faced by the fostering sector.”
