SWIMMERS in the borough have raised £2,500 for Wigan and Leigh Hospice.
Members of Hindley Pool swimming baths took part in a sponsored swim to support their local hospice and raised £2,500.
The event was also to highlight how popular the baths are following the council’s decision to find a community group to run the facilities in a bid to save costs.
Failing that, the pool could close.
Eileen Blake, chief organiser, said: “We wanted to help Wigan and Leigh Hospice as almost everyone knows someone who has been to the hospice and there are a lot of people who need its help.
“The money raised will go towards provided services and entertainment at the hospice for the patients.
“If the pool stays open, we will make this an annual event.”
Ward councillor Jim Ellis said: “It is a tremendous achievement what the group have done and highlights the need for the swimming facilities.”
An independent report this week revealed that Wigan does not have enough swimming provision at the moment to meet demand.
