SLIMMING stars from Wigan’s Lose Weight Feel Great weight management programme will model not only their healthier figures but also their newfound confidence at a special event next week.
Lost Weight, Feel Fabulous, taking place at Leigh Sports Village on Friday, (September 20), will celebrate the successes of Wigan Council-commissioned services - Community Weight Management, run by leisure and culture provider WLCT in partnership with Slimming World, and Trim Down Shape Up, run by ABL health. The event, which features clothes from Leigh retailer M & Co, will raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Emma Martin, of WLCT’s Active Living Team, said: “We all know how important it is to try to be a healthy weight but sometimes we need a little bit of help and this is where Lose Weight Feel Great comes in.
“The Lost Weight Feel Fabulous fashion show will highlight the impact that weight loss has had on our participants’ lives – from carrying out simple everyday tasks with ease, to being able to run for the bus without getting out of breath. We are really proud to provide such an effective and life-changing service.“We hope that you will join us in celebrating in Lose Weight Feel Great’s successes and look forward to seeing you on the night!”
Trim Down Shape Up, which runs the men’s health programme on the Lose Weight Feel Great pathway, will also be attending on the night to present their outstanding male participants with awards.
Tickets for the event, which starts at 7pm, can be purchased by calling 01942 488481. Lose Weight Feel Great participants can buy tickets from instructors at their sessions. There will be limited tickets available for purchase on the door, though people are encouraged to pre-order as last year’s event sold out quickly.
Lose Weight Feel Great has offered support to people in Ashton, Leigh and Wigan since January 2009. In the last four-and-a-half years more than 25,000 local people have contacted Lose Weight Feel Great and been given a helping hand on their weight loss journey.
This is reflected in the fact that Wigan has become one of the first boroughs in the UK to show a decline in the number of people whose weight is impacting on their health. Many participants, including some of the fashion show models, have managed to reduce, or even stop taking, medication as conditions such as high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes have improved so much after losing weight.

She said: “I’ve always been what is considered overweight, but always made excuses to get out of sorting it out.
“I stopped doing PE in year 9 at school so since then I hadn’t done any exercise at all for over 10 years.
“My boss at work signed up with the lose weight feel great scheme and she loved it, she did so well and I found myself ashamed that I was being so lazy about it. I didn’t know what I weighed because for years I’d avoided the scales so stepping on the first time to see how much I weighed I was horrified how heavy I actually was - 17st 4.5lbs!
“That very day I rang up to join the lose weight feel great scheme and was told my BMI was too high to qualify so I went along to Slimming world for a couple of weeks to bring myself into category.
“When I first went to the exercise class I was terrified. I hadn’t done any exercise in years. But Hazel was lovely and she told me to take it at my own pace.
“That first class I was exhausted, sweaty and red faced in my size 22/24 leggings, but I felt so proud of myself for finally stepping up and doing something about it.
“In a year I have gone from doing no exercise to doing a good 4-8 hours a week, I do Zumba, workouts, even running, all in a size 8 leggings!
“And one of the proudest moments I’ve ever had was taking part in race for life this year, running most of it and completing it in a good time of 42 minutes.
“This has been the best thing I’ve ever done. I feel amazing and have so much more energy.”
