High suicide rates lead to formation of new support group

A NEW task force has been formed in the borough to explore the difficult and sensitive issue of suicide.

The Prevention of Suicide Alliance: Wigan (POSA – W) brings together expertise from a wide-range of organisations including the council, Greater Manchester Police, The Samaritans, Wigan Veterans’ Council and the State-of-Mind Rugby League scheme.

The borough has one of the highest rates in England for people taking their own lives, with 28 suicides recorded in 2008 and 24 last year.

The new group’s aim is to look into the issues surrounding suicide and working with bereaved families in a bid to see what lessons can be learned to identify the problems and prevent future tragedies.

The move is being spearheaded by Wigan Council member Coun Emma McGurrin, who in July put a motion to a meeting of the Full Council expressing concern at the relatively high figures for suicides in our borough particularly amongst young men under 35.
