THIS is the terrifying moment a knife-wielding robber forced fast food staff to open a safe - all for a bag of coins.

The masked raider escaped with only £250 in 20 pence pieces in a crime which could land him and his getaway driver many years behind
bars.

Police have released CCTV images of the intruder who struck at the McDonalds eatery at the Parsonage Retail Park in Leigh shortly after 1am on Thursday, November
27.

He is first caught before pulling a balaclava down over his face and then a vaulting the counter before producing a knife and threatening staff with it.

He forced them to open the safe and he grabbed the bag of coins, before jumping back over the counter and
leaving.

He was last seen getting into the passenger seat of a Vauxhall Astra van driven by an accomplice which headed off towards Clifton
Street.

The man is described as white, about 5ft 7ins tall, of slim build and he spoke with a local accent.

He was wearing a black and white striped jumper, grey jogging bottoms with stripes down each leg, white trainers, black gloves and a black balaclava and was carrying a 6ins knife.

The first published image suggests he may have also had a moustache.

Det Con Stuart Woodhead of Wigan Division said: “Fortunately no-one was hurt, but staff were understandably terrified as the man threatened them with a knife.

“I would urge you to look at the CCTV images closely.

“The offender has a distinctive tattoo on his left shoulder/neck and someone may recognise it and, if you do, I would urge you to contact
police.”
