Culcheth WI met for its 25th annual general meeting in Newchurch Parish Hall last month.
Mrs Lillian Houghton the President welcomed everyone and members with birthdays in November were congratulated.
Dates for the diary included the afternoon outing to Tatton Park on December 15. The first theatre outing for the new year would be to see Alfie at the Octagon. Tickets were also on sale for the annual WI Carol Concert at Burtonwood in December.
Seventeen members had enjoyed lunch at the Barn Owl in Lymm in early November and another lunch was planned for the end of January. Members were told that the Christmas tree was being entered for the annual Tree Festival at the Parish Church.
The speaker for the afternoon was Mr Peter Braun who told us the history of the Georgian house at Dunham Massey and shared some fascinating tales, including scandal, of the Earls of Stamford, one of whom married a bare-back circus rider, and the 2nd Earl of Warrington who, without telling his wife, wrote a book on the desirability of divorce. His talk was illustrated by a laptop presentation showing the treasures and beautiful pieces of furniture contained in the house. All the members enjoyed Mr Braun’s talk and he was thanked by Lydia Howard.
The Treasurer began the AGM business by explaining her financial statement, which had been circulated to members beforehand. The Secretary then gave her report on the year’s activities, following which the President read out her annual report.
The ladies who had volunteered to be on the new committee were then introduced to the members and their election approved. Mrs Lillian Houghton had agreed to stay on as President.
The next meeting will be on Tuesday, December 20 at 2pm which will follow the annual luncheon at the Daten. (Meetings are at 2pm on the third Tuesday of the month in the Parish Hall).
