Centurions join the Party to help Hospice fund-raiser

LEIGH Centurions were among the many stall holders at the annual Wigan and Leigh Hospice Garden Party at the weekend.

Manned by Centurions team manager Frank Taylor his wife Christine and chief executive Trevor Barton, the stall also had a visit from players Bob Beswick and Craig Briscoe.

The extensive gardens at the Hospice were filled with hundreds of people, all keen to explore the dozens of stalls packed with all manner of goodies from fascinating food to an extensive range of excellent products.

There were also a variety of raffles, including an amazing ‘bottle’ raffle organised and manned by members of Hindley Rotary Club.

Hospice fund-raising and events officer Julie Dennis said: “We were delighted with the terrific range of goods on sale and the fantastic help and support from all sectors of the community: the many people who gave their time, the companies and organisations who donated goods and helped in a host of different ways and of course the hundreds of people who came along to support us on the day. Even the weather was kind to us.”

Another first for this year’s event was the sponsorship from one of the UK’s leading vinegar suppliers, locally based Ellesey’s who celebrated their 80th birthday by inviting anyone with the name Ellesey (with any variation of spelling) to join their party in a giant marquee.

Last year the Hospice Garden Party raised more than £4,600 and this year it is hoped to at least match that figure.

Julie added: “Special thanks must go to everyone who supported in any way, from the many kind donations of goods and the hours of time donated both before, during and after the event”.
