LEIGH has seen a surge in young people being confirmed in the Catholic church in the area.

Around 250 teenagers, mostly students from St Mary’s RC High School in Astley, have been confirmed at St Joseph’s RC Church in the last month alone. Father Dave Heywood said: “Young people sometimes get a bad press but this is good news, not only for the Church but also for the people of the Leigh area, that there are so many who are prepared to stand up and declare their commitment to their faith.”

Father Heywood said he expects around 500 children from Leigh’s Catholic primary schools, mainly in Year 4, 5 and 6, to be confirmed next spring.

This good news for the church in Leigh, after the nine Catholic parishes in the area were streamlined into just two, earlier this year.
