AN Atherton pub has won a prestigious accolade from beer watchdog Camra.
The Campaign for Real Ale has voted the popular Pendle Witch as Pub of the Season by the South East Lancashire branch just in time to celebrate licensee Joan Houghton’s 40 years in the trade - and almost 14 years at the Moorhouse’s Brewery owned hostelry.
Sarah Bellis, chair of Camra South East Lancashire branch said: “The award recognises the high standard of the pub in general, the friendly atmosphere and the excellent quality of the cask beer.”
The Pendle Witch, in Warburton Place, off Market Street, has been included in the highly respected Camra Good Beer Guide for 13 years and boasts eight hand pumps regularly serving both Moorhouse’s famous ‘witch ales’ together with two guest beers.
The Pub of the Season award is judged by branch members against key criteria including the welcome and general ambiance of the pub as well as cleanliness and cask beer quality.
Mike Hiscock, national sales manager said: “This is terrific recognition for the pub just when Joan is celebrating forty years in the trade.
“In recent years Joan has made the pub even more successful with a food offer, great cask beer and popular events so, it is extremely well deserved.”
The Pendle Witch has a separate games room with Sky Sports and two large screen TVs, as well as an air conditioned conservatory and heated patio area.
It also holds regular events including 60s and 70s nights on Fridays.
