Thousands attend ComicCon

A DUO of Doctor Whos materialised at Wigan’s third ComicCon.

And the sci-fi excitement was upped further when Dave Prowse, the giant actor who brought Darth Vader to such dark life in Star Wars, joined former Time Lord actors Sylvester McCoy and Peter Davison, to sign autographs, have their pictures taken and chat with legions of fans packed in Robin Park Sports Centre.

Thousands of fans weathered hail storms to attend what is fast becoming one of the biggest events of its kind in the North West. In fact organiser Paul Prescott of Funky Figures, Market Street, is already hatching plans for an even bigger convention next July.

Also in the celebrity line-up was Kiwi heart-throb Chris Rankin, who played Percy Weasley in the Harry Potter films, auctioneers Sean Kelly and buyer Jesse McClure from the US show Storage Hunters.

Multi-award-winning Wigan graphic novelists Bryan and Mary Talbot, fresh from collaborating on the acclaimed Sally Heathcote Suffragette novel, demonstrated their work.

And the sports hall was thronging with folk buying and selling all manner of sci-fi, horror and fantasy memorabilia.

Paul said: “We wanted people to have a bit more space, to be a bit more comfortable and have an even better time and that has certainly been the case.

“We also staggered admission time tickets to help to keep congestion to a minimum.”
