YOUNG skaters learning to roll with it received certificates for a new grading programme.

Around 40 pupils from the beginner classes at the Pier-based Wigan Roller Rink, ranging in age from four-year-old Sophia Green to Thomas Brown, 74, passed their first tests on the way to becoming expert artistic roller skaters.

The Eckersley Mill rink’s certificate programme, which was started last November, divides learning the basic skills of roller skating into six grades, which cover everything from taking the very first steps across the rink and being able to touch your toes to learning basic freestyle skating, dance moves and artistic skills such as jumping and spinning.

Confident skaters who have mastered the basics can then go on to study grades seven, eight and nine in their chosen speciality, before making their way into the world of competitive and top-level skating.

The grading marks the first time since the rink’s first heyday in the 1970s that people have been able to learn the sport from scratch, and the classes are already proving extremely popular.

Adult classes run on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, and the rink also runs family beginners’ classes on Thursday evenings from 5.30pm to 6.30pm and on Sunday mornings from 9.30am to 10.30am.
