WIGAN and Leigh Hospice threw open its doors for an afternoon of summer fun at the annual garden party.

The grounds of the charity’s headquarters in Hindley were filled with stalls selling everything from handbags to cupcakes, while young Wiganers enjoyed attractions including a bouncy castle and face painting.

There was also musical entertainment courtesy of Wigan Ukulele Band, who performed a range of favourite songs by one of the borough’s most famous music stars, George Formby, and tunes with a distinctively local flavour, including the well-known ode to Uncle Joe’s Mintballs.

The afternoon at the Kildare Street site ended with a barbeque accompanied by the traditional summer time favourite of strawberries and cream.

The event is one of the biggest in the hospice’s calendar, with the events raising thousands of pounds to help its work providing state-of-the-art palliative care to Wiganers with life-limiting illnesses.
