Get on line at town centre digital show

LEIGH Civic Square hosts a day of digital events for residents today with the chance to win one of a handful of state-of-the-art tablet computers.

Our Digital Planet aims to help those who have never used the internet or need some digital support to get online with the help of experts.

A whole host of workshops and practical demonstrations will take place between 11am and 4pm to celebrate the many benefits of the internet, including an e-marketplace, Get On Line Bus, Citizens Advice Bureau and Wigan and Leigh College displays.

To attend one of today’s workshops call Alison Goulding on 01942 827581.

Cabinet member for communications Coun Chris Ready said: “The increased availability of devices connected to the internet, such as tablets and mobile phones, are helping us to feel better connected, save money and time.

“The downside of this however is that those who don’t have the skills or equipment can feel left out and excluded from society.

“Our lifestyles are becoming increasingly geared towards a digital age, where we keep in touch with friends and family via social networking sites, apply for a job via email, access help and advice from a website or make payments online.

“That’s why it’s never been as important to make sure that everyone has the opportunity.”
