WIGANERS with disabilities will be able to enjoy all the excitement of a top nightclub thanks to a ground-breaking new event.
Two organisations working with disabled people, the Just BU and Every1 community interest companies (CICs), are putting on Fusion, a monthly club night run by and for disabled adults starting later this month.
The night, which will run at Cafe Stella in Leigh’s Bradshawgate, will give many of the revellers their first taste of the atmosphere and music of a club as families and carers are often concerned about the safety of town centre venues late at night.
There will also be opportunities to give service users at the two CICs the chance to spin some tunes on the cafe’s decks with help from DJ John White, as well as volunteering for everything from taking tickets on the door to helping out behind the bar.
Just BU founder Justin Fellows, 41, said: “The club night is a really positive development because so many different groups are working together to create it.
“When we launched the tickets we sold 50 in about two hours, and lots of people have been really enthusiastic.
“As soon as I approached Cafe Stella they were really willing to give it a try. It’s a chance for people to experience a nightclub but in a safe way, because mixing with the general public on a Saturday night can be quite frightening for disabled people.”
Justin is keen to open up the night to anyone using day services across the borough, disabled people living with support in their own homes and disabled members of community groups from across Wigan and Leigh.
Several of the CICs’ keenest music lovers have been learning about the art of spinning tracks in clubs from Every1 founder John White, who is also a DJ and radio presenter, with service user Mark Winnard already booked in to play a set on the night.
Fusion will take place on September 24 from 7pm until around 11pm. The night is open to anyone aged 18 or over with a disability. Tickets are £2.50 or £4 if accompanied by someone supporting, and can also be bought through Wigan Council’s e-marketplace. To find out more, visit www.facebook.com/Fusion.cafe.stella
